叩き上げの英語 232
An American sergeant, whose name I didn’t know, took four of us Japanese Air Force Personnel to one of those buildings which looked all alike.
The sergeant told us that there wasn’t much time to lose before the meal. He said we had better go and eat quick.
So we went out in a hurry and didn’t even look up at the number of the building we were in.
When I finished eating, there was nobody but me left in the mess hall. I got out and got lost. I thought this was my building.
私のこの釈明はすんなり通じたらしく、だれも英文については質問してこなかった。この期に及んでも、私は自分の作った英作文を気にしていたのである。
すると女性のうちの一人が聞いてきた。
Woman: Are you sure you are Japanese?
I: Yes, I sure am.
Woman: How can you prove it?
I: I don’t have passport nor do I have the ID card with me now. I left them in my room.
Woman: I am not talking about your passport or anything.
